Professional Electrician In Fort Lauderdale

Hiring any commercial or home service professional can be a daunting task especially when it comes to electrical work. You are busy in your day to day life and all that entails and now you have to find a qualified person to take care of an electrical issue?
There are not only a lot of “experts” in the field locally, but they often come with different areas of expertise. While some do projects with local contracting companies for large scale projects to map out installation of electrical circuit for large buildings, commercial structures, malls, homes, etc. others may concentrate on specialized areas like roads, highways, laying wires and the like. Unless it’s a small job, you are going to want to contact 3-5 experts in the area you are considering to come out to your home to give you an estimate on the work. This way you can get an idea of what the average price of the job will be.

When you go on the search, always be aware that you must find someone who is licensed, certified, insurance and competent in the area you want to hire them for. When looking for a home services company it is imperative that you find someone you can trust like our friends all over the world who provide valuable services. If you need an expert to do extensive work in your home, you’d want to talk to someone, or get referrals, for someone who is well trained and experienced on home wiring and systems associated with modern home building and improvements. Methodology is evolving and equipment is always improving so you want an expert who is up to speed in these areas if they are working in your home or commercial property.
As we’ve mentioned numerous times before, we recommend taking the time to research and due diligence including asking for referrals, doing a Google or Bing search for local companies, visiting the websites like Angie’s List, Home Advisor and Thumbtack as well as some others less knows ones like Nextdoor where you can ask your neighbors and inquire about exactly what you need done.

It always on you to properly explain the work you want done in a coherent and concise way so the contractor understands what needs completing. We will come out to your location to see what the issues are and provide a free estimate. Every job is different. Some are small jobs that require new wiring but is time consuming and other jobs are small like one we just recently finished which only involved replacing burned out light bulbs at a commercial facility. Our expertise and care was valuable to the clients as they needed them replaced quickly but had no means of getting to them. Our vehicles come equipped with bucket trucks to lift our personnel high enough to do this simple task. Other small projects involve light switches, fuse boxes, outlets or sockets but it’s important to let the person knows exactly what you need done. From easy to complex, each professional service company brings different skill levels to the job and some, quite frankly, do not have the skills to complete more difficult, complex jobs. You need to convey the job required and ask if they are qualified to perform it.

How To Hire a Great Electrical Contractor

Contrary to what others say, it is not easy to find a great home services pro. There are a lot of them. They all claim to be experts and they don’t all have the character to be honest if something is “over their head” in terms of ability and skill level and many lack the proper licensing, documents and insurances should something go wrong. Let’s be honest, electricity can affect every aspect of your home and business and can result in huge damages including fires and death.
First things first, as we’ve harped on before, you must take the time to do your research and not get ripped off. Below are some steps you can take:

1) Get Referrals. Ask around the office and the neighborhood- Ask your family, friends or neighbors if they can recommend a professional to you and inquire if they're pleased with the work. Better yet, ask them if they can show you the project they completed and ask them how long it took the worker to complete it.

2) Ask Facebook for recommendations- Facebook installed a cool new feature awhile back that allows its users to ask for recommendations in the local area. Just go online and post that you’re looking for a great ______ in your city and you’re looking for input.

3) Visit The NextDoor App- One of the best apps that we also use ourselves in Nextdoor. It’s a local app for its uses to
connect with their neighbors for local events, happenings, gatherings, announcement and recommendations. I would never hire anyone locally without consulting my Nextdoor app first. I also provide great referrals to my neighbors since we deal with a lot of small business owners.

4) Check Home Advisor, Thumbtack and Angie’s List- There are numerous online website and apps for home services that you can conduct research on. Reviews are huge so take the time to read them.

5) Check Reviews- Reviews are a huge part of the online world and any company that’s on top of their will have a system in place that makes it easy for reviews. Check their Google, Yelp, Bing and Facebook reviews.

6) Check with the local Better Business Bureau- The BBB has its own reviews system now, and you can go on and check if a business is in hot water by any former clients or customers. Do it. It’s worth the few minutes it takes to check out a business.

7) Ask About Their History And Experience- In all honesty, a brand new "expert" fresh out of technical schooling could just have received their licensing fresh off the presses and they could be fully insured, bonded and licensed and it all looks great but what if they’ve NEVER done any electrical contracting work and have no experience. Now sorry, I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to leave something so challenging and dangerous as electrical work to someone fresh out of school. I want an experienced, seasoned veteran who knows the ins and outs of the job, what fair pricing is and how to get it completed in a timely manner the first time.

8) Get A Written Quote- Any solid pro will expect you to ask for a written quote for “big” jobs and will come out to your location to take a look at the job and what it entails. Most will give you a quote over the phone which is a “ballpark” for the smaller jobs. We will come out for either. No worries. But be cautious if someone won’t give you a written quote, refuses to visit the job site or is difficult to work with or converse with over the phone. We love our work. We want to talk to you and we want to come out to your locations to help you. In addition, be aware of the “low balling” of your project that may get them the job but give you as headache later when they tack on additional charges and hours.

What Areas Do They Have Expertise In?

Not all electrical technicians are created equal! All must have a license and you should insist they provide a proof of a bond and insurance to cover the work being performed but in general they can be divided into 3 distinct groups:
  1. Outside work on outdoors electrical lines that connect to power plants.
  2. Inside work on commercial and industrial buildings that require a lot of power.
  3. Residential electrical companies are typically for the homeowner. If so, you'll want to hire one that specializes in wiring for residential properties and who are experts at low-voltage systems and wiring to install fuse boxes and light fixtures.

Questions To Ask Any Home Service Professional

When doing your research, especially for the larger more complicated work, here are some questions we recommend asking any provider and specifically electrical contractors who may be entering your home and performing dangerous work that requires proper licensing and protections for you; the consumer:

1) How long have you been in business?

Common sense says, you want a company that’s been in business in the area for awhile. We can confirm that some businesses will get some bad reviews and then simply dissolve the business and start a new one with the same poor track record, businesses tactics and employees. Electrical experts go to school to learn their craft just like most professionals. They also have apprentice programs where they work with a long time professional that helps them sharpen their skills. To be considered a professional, licensed contractor a student must go through an apprentice type relationship with journeyman and master electrical contractors and complete eight thousand (8,000) hours of practical work experience before continuing on and graduating to the journeyman level. Just so you know, once they reach that “journeyman” status, they are considered capable of doing most electrical work. However, in order to do design work they must complete an additional 2,000 hours on the job and more extensive testing.

2) How many employees do you have?

You don’t want to be crunched into the schedule in a way that your work will be hurried. You want adequate staff and a decent sized business that will give you the time to complete the project in a conscientious way.

3) Do you have good online reviews?

This goes without repeating but reviews are the online police for poor company practices. Make sure you look them up and “review their reviews”!

4) Can you provide a valid Florida business license?

No matter what you’re having done, this is a must. From the simple to the complex, electrical contractors are required by law to carry state licensing from the training they received. Make sure they provide a license and that it is in your state and current. One last thing, make sure the workers that show up to do the work show you their license too!

5) Are You Licensed, Bonded And Insured?

Trust us, electricity and the potential pitfalls of faulty work can be costly. First, make sure your electrical contractor is licensed in Florida and can provide certification that they can operate in the county or area you live in. A lot can go south quickly with poor electrical work so you want to make certain they are bonded. This means that a third party can pay for damages caused by the contracting company or pay in the event the job is not finished. You also want to make sure that in addition to the bond, that they are fully insured. You want to hire a company that has the adequate amount of insurance coverage for the job you’re hiring them to do in addition to their license and bond. Check the policy and don’t hesitate to call the insurer to conform their coverage amounts. Last thing you want to make sure of is that the company carries workers' compensation insurance. This means the company you hire will pay for medical care for any accidents resulting in injuries that happen on your property to its employees

6) Do You Offer a Warranty?

Reputable electrical contractors provide a warranty for their work. Ask your contact or business owners if parts and labor are under warranty and for how long. Document the conversation, ask for something  in writing and make a note of the date of expiration.

7) How Much Do You Charge by the Hour?

All jobs are different. If it’s a small job you can try to get a quote or estimate over the phone before they come out. For bigger projects, you’ll want a written estimate along with what they charge per house should any additional work be required. Do not sign anything without a written estimate.

8) Who Will Do the Work?

As referenced above, you don’t want to go to all the trouble to make sure they are licensed, bonded and insured only to have them send out someone who is not covered under their policies, etc. Make sure whoever is doing the work is “covered”. Same with an event where they might hire a subcontractor. Make sure they are covered by exact bond and insurance.

9) Will You Have To Get A Permit?

Not all work will require a permit in your city of county. But it depends on what is being done. You must ask them early in the process if they will have to pull a permit for the work and insist that, if so, it be put in their name protecting you from any issues is the work completed is not to your satisfaction.

By getting a thorough knowledge and understanding of the ins and outs of hiring an expert to come into your home, and once you've done it with a new one, you will be able to go through these steps easily with any other contractor so that you can protect yourself. Before you know it, you will have a long list of trusted experts in many home services and commercial services and your neighbors will all be calling for your recommendations!
